Hong Kong’s grassroots often take centre stage in Fruit Chan’s films, from the “1997 Trilogy” to The Midnight After. Urban spaces, inhabited by these people, appears as if a character in his films. The latest edition of Jockey Club ifva Everywhere – People Cinema, which always bring alternative cinematic experiences in public spaces, will be screening Fruit Chan’s Little Cheung in Tamar Park. Enjoy a film filled with Hong Kong sentiment facing the Victoria Harbour, which is also iconic to Hong Kong.

The eight-year-old Little Cheung often delivers takeaway for his family’s restaurant, and gets along so well with customers from all walks of life. Ah Fan, an illegal immigrant of the same age as Cheung, is declined for job at the restaurant, but Cheung befriends her. The two kids start their urban adventure from Hong Kong’s old district to Tsim Sha Tsui. Cheung runs away from family after he was punished for asking about his lost brother, and Ah Fan faces deportation owing her illegal status…

Little Cheung is the final episode of director Fruit Chan’s “1997 Trilogy”, and is also his love letter to Hong Kong. In the film, Cheung and Ah Fan shout to the harbour off Tsim Sha Tsui, “Hong Kong is ours!” Twenty years later, when we, in Tamar Park, hear their voices uttered from right across the Victoria Harbour, will we have an epiphany about our city?
